Lingual braces are stuck behind the teeth but they work like conventional orthodontic braces. Lingual braces cannot be used for everyone as they are limited to treating certain problems. Your orthodontist will be able to tell you if lingual braces are an option in your particular situation. Lingual braces are only available on a private basis.

What are the benefits to having lingual braces?

  • With lingual braces nobody will be able to tell you are undergoing orthodontic treatment as they are hidden from view.
  • You are able to see the treatment progress right from the beginning because unlike conventional braces, they do not cover the front surfaces of your teeth.
  • Due to lingual braces being a low friction system, treatment times will often be shorter than with conventional braces.

What are the disadvantages to having lingual braces?

  • They may affect your speech initially and cause irritation to the tongue. Here at Malvern Orthodontics we use brackets which have the lowest profile compared to other lingual brackets, thereby reducing the problems encountered.
  • Your appointments will be slightly longer with lingual braces than if you had conventional braces due to the amount of adjustment needed.
