What is a mouth guard?
A mouth guard is a specially made rubber-like cover, which fits exactly over the teeth and gums, cushioning them and protecting them from damage. Mouth guards can also prevent damage to the jaw, neck and even the brain – helping to prevent concussion and damage caused by a heavy blow.

When would I need a mouth guard?
It is important to wear a mouth guard whenever you play sport that involves physical contact or the risk of being struck by moving objects, for example; rugby, boxing, cricket and hockey etc.

How much will it cost?
You cannot get mouth guards on the NHS but when you consider the cost of expensive dental work and the risk of missing teeth, it is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

What is a custom-made mouth guard?
These are made to fit your teeth exactly. They are the ideal solution once your teeth have been straightened and can be made at the same visit as your braces are taken off.

Will the mouth guard fit over my fixed brace?
You will need a special type of orthodontic mouth guard, which is available at Malvern Orthodontics. These are available in a variety of colours. Just ask when you have your fixed braces fitted. image

How long do custom-made mouth guards last?
If you are still growing, new teeth will come through and move into position. Your mouth guard may become too tight or loose, and will need to be remade to fit the new shape of your mouth. Orthodontic mouth guards, which are not tight-fitting, may be more suitable for children who have more teeth to come through and who have not yet had their orthodontic treatment.
Adults may not need to have their mouth guards replaced quite so often. Mouth guards are like any other form of sports equipment and will suffer from wear and tear. It is recommended that you take your mouth guard along to the dentist or orthodontist when you go for your check-up, so that it can be checked.

Can I get coloured mouth guards?
There are many types of mouth guard including striped, multi-coloured and clear. Many people now have coloured mouth guards made in their favourite team’s colours or to match their own sports strip. Your orthodontist will be able to tell you whether they are able to provide coloured mouth guards.
